Performance Lab Reminder: We’re Moving By One Day! — But Just This Once

A quick reminder for everyone:

This month’s Performance Lab is moving from our usual 3rd Wednesday to the 3rd TUESDAY — August 18th.

I’ll be flying out to Louisiana for a performance, so we’re shifting the date by just one day. Next month, we’re right back to our normal 3rd Wednesday schedule.

And actually… this creates a pretty cool opportunity.

If you’re normally unable to make Performance Lab because Wednesdays don’t work for you, this might be your chance to check it out. If that’s you, reach out and let me know!

So… what exactly IS Performance Lab?

It’s not a drop-in theater class, an open mic, or a night of random performance games. (although we do those things sometimes)

Performance Lab is a small, intentional group of serious artists, creatives, and performers who are interested in taking their work to the next level—or the highest level they can reach.

We typically get started at 6:00 PM. The first 30 minutes or so are often an opportunity for one performer to present a longer bit, act, routine, or piece of work for the group to review and work through.

After that, we’ll usually move into improvisational challenges and exercises designed to help us develop specific skills.

And if you don’t have something prepared? That’s completely fine. You don’t need to show up with a polished act or presentation. The exercises are there specifically to give us something to work on, experiment with, and learn from.

The real value is getting to do that work in a room with a group of wonderfully supportive—but appropriately critical—eyes on you.

People who can see things you might not see yourself. People who can help you identify where you need to grow, challenge you when you’re playing it safe, and help you develop whatever area of your work needs the most attention.

Think of it as a performer think tank.

We challenge each other. We give honest feedback. We help each other develop ideas. We celebrate successes, troubleshoot failures, and invest in the success of the people around us.

If you have something prepared that you’d like to present, you’re welcome to bring it. If it’s longer than 10 minutes, just let me know ahead of time.

A couple of important things:

Performance Lab is not open to the general public. You need to be preapproved to attend.

If we haven’t met before, send me a message and tell me a little about yourself, what you do, and what you’re working toward. If I think Performance Lab is a good fit, I’ll send you the address.

This isn’t about gatekeeping. There are plenty of wonderful groups where the goal is simply to have fun, play theater games, and hang out—and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

That’s just not what Performance Lab is.

We’re here to do the work.

And if you become a regular participant, I ask that you become a member of my Patreon as well. Most of the people who participate are already Patreon supporters. That’s part of how we support the community we’re building and stay invested in one another’s success.

We’re not just showing up for our own projects. We’re invested in each other’s projects, too.

So if you’re a serious performer, artist, or creative looking for a room full of people who actually want to help you get better…

Maybe you belong in the Lab.
