A Portrait: The Student Who Didn’t Wait
One student I worked with had sky-high ambitions: the biggest stages, the largest crowds, beyond the usual circuits. We had already tackled his costuming, habits, presence, the mindset around money, and lined up goals for financial success. We even changed his hairstyle. But then a new item rose to the top of the list: his teeth.
I hesitated for a moment, advising that someone should fix their teeth is a deeply personal observation. But equally, truth is precious.
So I told him, “You might want to think about getting your teeth fixed.”
The next morning, he had an orthodontist appointment. Forty-eight hours later, he was fitted with Invisalign. Instant, decisive action.
He didn’t wait for the perfect timing, the perfect budget. He didn’t come back a year later and say, "I did it." He knew it was necessary, believed in the advice, and executed it immediately.
Was the money there? No. Did he pay now to climb higher later? Yes. Some choices give us more control over our destiny, others give us less. I’m a firm believer in doing the former. You will never be able to control everything, nor should we try to. That is impossible. But when it comes to the things you do have control over, bring them to their highest level, in this case, getting our teeth in order.
My life is a reflection of this philosophy fully lived, and is the model for the creative journey I guide my students on. A journey that happens as quickly as they want it to happen.
I’ve seen students soak up an idea, and come back the very next day and say: “I did it.”
Which is great! They are taking the teaching and applying it, and they are doing it quickly.
But, in this pursuit, you are the architect of your destiny. You’re the driver, and you get to decide how fast or slow you go.
My role? To be your nitrous, there to boost you, push you, encourage you, or patiently wait, ever ready, while you sort it out.
I can go at whatever speed you're comfortable with.
But remember, you’re in charge of the gas, the brake, and the steering. And you are the one who decides how quickly you advance.
That said, the field of entertainment is brutally competitive. There are so many talented people chasing the same dream. And to make a splash, you can’t just dip a toe.
I mean, if you only want to play part-time gigs, just do it on the side here and there. Then that's cool, you can dabble...
But if your goal is to build a full-time career, and travel the world performing, you have to go hard. Push harder than everyone else. Turn your weaknesses into strengths. And outpace the competition with smarts and speed.
