(Real Estate Testimonial) One of the Principles I Teach: Why I Encourage My Students to Pursue Home Ownership

Most people know me (Mr. Bill Berry) from the stage. Over the years I’ve built a life around performing, traveling to dozens of countries, writing books, and teaching unusual skills like fire handling and sword swallowing. But the lessons I share with my students extend far beyond performance.

One of the principles I talk about often is building a stable foundation for your life. Creativity, adventure, and personal growth thrive when there is a strong base underneath them. For many people, one of the most powerful steps toward that stability is home ownership.

To be clear, I’m not a real estate agent and I’m not in the real estate business. What I am is someone who has spent years studying real estate, renovating properties, and thinking strategically about how homes can be used not only as places to live but as tools for long-term stability and opportunity.

Because of that passion, I often help friends and students think through the process. Sometimes that means talking about credit, sometimes it means planning financially so buying a home becomes possible, and sometimes it means walking through properties together and evaluating them carefully before making a big decision.

Recently I had the chance to help one of my students navigate the process of buying her first home here in St. Petersburg. From evaluating properties to thinking through negotiation and long-term potential, it was a collaborative effort to make sure she felt confident about one of the biggest decisions of her life.

Here’s what she had to say about the experience.

“Having Bill involved in my home buying process made an enormous difference. From the very beginning, Bill approached everything with the mindset of someone who genuinely wanted me to make a smart decision. He was a crucial part of me feeling confident in the purchase and helped me feel confident I wasn’t just being sold sunshine and rainbows from my realtor without knowing what could go wrong down the road.

One of the things I appreciated most was how carefully Bill looked at the bones of the property. When we walked through homes, he wasn’t just admiring the finishes, he was paying attention to the structure, the history of repairs, and whether previous work was done properly. He would point out things I never would have noticed, explain what might be a future issue, and help me understand what was a true red flag versus what was normal for a home.

Bill was also incredibly helpful when it came time to negotiate the offer and review the inspection. He brought a thoughtful, strategic approach and helped me think through what mattered most and where it made sense to push back.

What really stands out is Bill’s ability to see the potential in a property. He provides great ideas about what could be done with the space both inside and outside. The entire time he is exploring a property you can tell he is thinking about everything that is possible. He also offers creative ideas for how a property could generate income.

I’m also really excited to continue working with Bill post purchase. We’re already talking about plans to turn my backyard into a dream outdoor space, and his experience with additional structures, including tiny homes and edible landscapes opens up so many possibilities (too many that I’m struggling to decide!)

More than anything, working with Bill felt like having someone truly in my corner. His number one priority was making sure I had all the information I needed and questions answered to make the right decision. I’m incredibly grateful for his guidance through the whole experience and looking forward to the projects ahead. I found my dream St. Pete home and I know it is only going to get better!”

One of the things I care most about as a mentor is helping people build lives that are both adventurous and sustainable.

Performers, artists, and independent thinkers often assume home ownership is out of reach because their career path doesn’t look traditional. In reality, with the right planning, patience, and strategy, it’s often far more achievable than people think.

If encouraging my students to juggle chainsaws, swallow swords, or explore the edges of possibility has taught me anything, it’s this: the things that seem impossible often become very real once you learn the right way to approach them.

For many people, owning a home is one of those things.

And when it happens, it can change the trajectory of a life.
